2001: A Space Odyssey

I am speechless. I cannot find words to describe this movie. This one of the rare movies that actually perfect, in my humble opinion. I am sure many will disagree with me, which is fine. But my experience watching this movie was almost surreal. Hardly a movie raised so many questions and none of the answers. This film blew my mind, and I think I'm going crazy after watching it. Because my brain couldn't comprehend what I just saw. I found myself in a strange place of infinity and beyond, and the film really struck the core of my heart. I feel like... I can't even tell you... I don't really understand. I am losing my mind!

In the year 2001, Astronaut David Bowman (Keir Dullea) sets off for Jupiter on a spaceship controlled by HAL 9000 (Douglas Rain), a revolutionary super computer system. When HAL endangers the crew's lives for the sake of the mission, Dave will have to first overcome the computer, then travel to the birthplace of the mysterious monolith, where whatever alien intelligence controls them decides that humanity is ready to take the next evolutionary step. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Based on a novel by Arthur C. Clarke.

I genuinely connected with the inner core of this film; and it affected me emotionally, spiritually, and all other things that make me questioned everything in the universe. The meaning of life, superintelligent computers, extraterrestrials, the search for God and a place in the universe, rebirth, and evolution are conveyed in an artistically ambiguous and intelligent way. This keeps the film ripe for debate and deep meditation. Alongside its use of music, although the relative lack of dialogue and conventional narrative cues has baffled many viewers. One of the film's most striking features is that there is NO dialogue whatsoever for the first twenty minutes or the entire last segment of the film. The entire narrative of these sections is carried by images, actions, sound effects, and title cards. The film combines eerie contemporary music with classical waltzes and ballet suites like "Blue Danube" by Strauss, is really effective. There are areas I prefer not to discuss because they are highly subjective and will differ from viewer to viewer. If the movie stirs the emotions, penetrates the subconscious of the viewer, stimulates however inchoately, the mythological and religious yearnings and impulses, then it has succeeded.

Regardless of how one interprets the meaning and purpose of the movie, it has brought viewers to one last intrepretation; as beings of pure energy or spirit or consciousness or thought. This movie is full with symbols and metaphors. I watched it several times, and I couldn't get it out of my head; the images, the meanings, the loneliness... How confused can a person be after watching this? My friend told me to smoke some pot before watching this. I disagree. The whole experience is making me high anyway. It delve into the psychology of the characters and plots. HAL 9000 is one of the most villainous characters in film history.  I am deathly scared of him, even he's a computer. He's a cold villain, really has no remorse whatsoever. When he said chillingly to David, "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." I thought I wanted to pee. David played by Keir Duella is incredibly handsome, and his acting is tremendous. It's unquestionably one of the great films of all time. But yes, not everyone likes it and the usual complaint is "long and boring." This film is not a rollercoaster, it's a meditation. The film also divided into 4 chapters, so it is long. What keeps the film alive today is because it is so mysterious.

Ratings: 10/10

i love this movie too. have you seen Tarkovsky's SOLARIS (1972, the original version, bukan yg di-remake Steven Soderbergh tahun 2002)? katanya sih "jawaban" atas Kubrick's 2001. tapi Tarkovsky membantahnya. oh man, he's absolutely one of the slowest directors in the world...
