King Kong

One word to describe this movie: Tired. And I mean it in a good way. After I watched this movie, I thought I was aboard in a roller-coaster ride that hardly stop and I was transferred into this out-of-this fantasy world and dream-like journey which I couldn't get out. That, my friend -- my personal description about this movie. I was exhausted, thrilled, sad, emotional, and whole lotta things which makes me just wanna go to sleep afterwards and just rest after watching this film. Good Lord, my head is still spinning after watching this, although my ass did fell asleep -- the movie is tad bit tooooo long. 3 freaking hours! I thought I almost die.

The story is about Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), an unemployed actress who in chance meets Carl Dunham (Jack Black) who asks her to be in his 'dockumentary' film with scripts from Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody). They embark into a journey to find a missing island called 'The Skull Island' to shoot the film there. When they arrive at the island, the natives kills most of the ship crew and kidnap Ann to be sacrifice to Kong, a big giant ape-like-gorilla. Jack, Carl and the rest of the surviving crew are now try to save Ann, and they trekking the jungle. Meanwhile in some moments, Kong falls in love with Ann. After saving Ann, Carl and the crew decides to capture the giant gorilla and bring it to New York City to be display as the 'Eight Wonder Of The World'.

I am not gonna tell you the whole story, that would be a spoiler. But I'd tell you this; the whole experience of watching this movie is so exhilarating, I almost couldn't breathe. Roller coaster ride, indeed. What I discovers about this movie is the attention of details. Details! Details! Details! From NYC to Skull Island details, going back and forth, you can see the contrast between the two worlds. The film is spectacular enough to turn my knuckles white. Although I do feel it's kinda like Jurassic Park,  but more scary. Jack Black is awesome in this movie. I've seen most of his movies, and he always plays this bumbling-baboon-of-idiot -- so when I watched him in this film, I couldn't believe that he can actually act! He is playing this manipulative, greedy, sinister character, and it just fit like a glove. I love the interaction between Ann and Kong, the emotional complexity from both of them. Kong is transformed from a killing machine to a shy gorilla trying to ask for her acceptance. Ann is georgeous, how she can actually sees Kong's soul through his eyes. I can feel the loneliness from both Kong and Ann, and they actually love each other. I don't know how it would works, but the emotion is there. There are scenes that actually makes me want to cry; like when Kong and Ann are looking into the sunrise/sunset and playing on the ice. I think it's wonderful.

Unfortunately, the movie is too long. It is too long. Too long. Really. I mean, I don't mind watching 3058 hours of Lord of The Rings trilogy Extended Version back to back, because of the monstrosity of the story. But Kong is from a shorter version of an original film, and I feel there are fillings everywhere to fill gaps between scenes. My friend walked out twice during the movie, because she couldn't stand it and deemed it as a boring experience. I beg to differ; this movie is not made to a person with a short attention span. There are some minor characters that I think should just be eliminated and focus more to the main characters. I mean, seriously -- the black dude dies! Oh, how horrifying! The Asian guy also meet his doom. Isn't it a typical of horror movie? Jeez... What's the point introducing them from the first place? Overall, I think this movie is trying too hard to be perfect. Not that I can blame it. I like it, yet I feel so tired and exhausted. I wish I can be like Peter Jackson who becomes so thin after making this movie -- I should've become thin also after the experience of watching this film. Wishful thinking.

i was just trying to make a point that he's from sumatra or any other tropical place nearby (look at the type of the jungle, trees and incests). comparison of scale when the crew stood near the boat and when kong was facing dinosaurs wih ann nearby, it seems that kong is bigger in size compared to the boat if not similar. doesnt make sense for me to take kong onboard and caged it there.

I like LOTR and KONG the same, but LOTR is not as boring as Kong. Kong is just longer. LOTR is fresh and new based on a book, while Kong is a remake based from an old movie so we already know da story anyway. Nice review. Crack me out. >josh>

i enjoyed this movie, but i think there are several things that should just be done with instead stretch it out longer. kong is not from sumatra. he's from skull island. those people have sumatran rats' cage in the ship.

Hmmm... to the opposite, I enjoyed this movie unlike my feeling and boredom for LOTR. I give four thumbs up for Peter Jackson's efforts to provide details on this movie. Can you believe that it was made just next door in Welly?! Even the theatre design was using Civic theatre in Aukland city where we watched Broken Flowers! However, I'm still wondering how they managed to take Kong to NYC using that boat? Other thing, the ice skating scene is too dumb for me. It's Kong! He's from Sumatra! C'mon.
