I remember I was watching this movie years ago, and first time I watched it, my heart was thumping like crazy. My friend and I were astonished how much we liked this movie, and not to mention a bit hot and heavy, heheh. Who would've thought that domination and submission are sexy? Although it is debatable that this movie a bit controversial, I enjoyed it.

Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has a cutter disorder and just been released from mental hospital. She lives with her parents (Lesley Ann Warren and Stephen McHattie) who are dysfunctional. Meanwhile a geeky guy named Peter (Jeremy Davies) falls in love with her. Determined to adjust to society, she learns to type and is hired as a secretary to an attorney named Edward Grey (James Spader). What initially a rather strained professional relationship becomes both closer and more personal as it progressively takes on bigger elements of domination and submission. Directed by Steven Shainberg.

Whew, you know after watching this, me and my friend were looking at each other and somehow pretty much tired. The whole movie seems pretty intense with strong performances, especially from James Spader whom I had a crush all over again ever since I watched him in "Pretty In Pink". Sure, somehow the idea of women being dominated by men especially in a sexual way might offend some people. But those attitude does exist in society, and maybe deep down inside, we ought to know who will win the battle between masculinity and feminity. This issues intersect with sexual desire and sexual expression. Sexuality is lived out and expressed in many different ways and many different places. A taboo issue about whether it is okay to women and men to express their desire and even obssesed with it.

This film is very original, and hardly any film depicting a mental disorder and sexual oppression from an average characters' point of view. So it is a breath of fresh air to see it. As a former cutter myself, I understand the hardness of being able to live a 'normal' life. This movie does not glorify mental disorder nor the sexual needs, but merely informed the viewers that there are people like this in real life. Absolutely dripping in sexual tension right from the very start of Lee and Edward's relationship, the characters pull you in to their far from normal lives with ease, and it's a pleasure to watch. Yes, this movie is odd. And if you can't watch pass the whole masochism in this movie, I suggest you avoid it. James Spader's acting is great, he allows himself to be vulnerable and awkward, not to mention charming. Maggie Gyllenhaal also great, but I must say she needs to STAND UP STRAIGHT! She always slouching, it annoys me. The music also made my ears hurt, but nonetheless is a good movie.
