Grosse Pointe Blank

This is one of my favorite movies. I mean, they don't make it like this anymore. I'm begging Hollywood to make this kind of movie again. I mean, this movie has everything; action, comedy, romance, drama, thriller, smart plot, dark humor, great writing, perfect cast, ultra violence, etc. I am thrilled everytime I watched this movie. And it has become one of my personal favorite.

Martin Blank (John Cussack) is a professional killer, a job he's doing great and proud of. But lately he's been down lately, maybe because his 10th year High School Reunion is coming from his hometown at Grosse Pointe. He also still holding a torch for his high school sweetheart, Debi (Minnie Driver) -- and this reunion makes him so stress he cannot focus. He decides to attend the reunion after his shrink (Alan Arkin) told advised him to and makes amend with Debi, while he's being followed by Grocer (Dan Aykroyd), a rival assasin who wants him to join his Union. It's up to Martin to keep his sanity and start a new life.

First of all, this is one of the best John Cussack movies. Forget about those romantic movies that he's been doing for years. This is one solely reason that he's exist; is to make this kind of movie. He's the perfect cast as Martin Blank, an assasin who gains morality and almost crack under pressure. He's superb in this character and carries the whole movie and have great chemistry with everyone in this movie. His character, Martin often rationalized his killing. He is an amoral, sharp, ruthless killer, but also vulnerably human, neurotic, conscience-ridden, tender and romantic. Despite these ostensibly impossible personality contradictions, audience never once question that his character is real, we can't help but like the guy, and never stop hoping that things work out for him. Pulling this off is a remarkable achievement and John Cussack does it brilliantly. This movie has become a cult flick with the audience, including me. Memorable quotes like, "I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork. How you've been?" or the funny one, "No, no. Psychopaths kill for no reason. I kill for 'money'. It's a 'job'. That didn't come out right." and the hillarious one, "It's not me! Why does everyone always think it's personal?"

Those are memorable quotes and always cracking me up. Does it makes me a violent person because I really like the brilliant choreographed and executed gunfight also the hand-to-hand combat sequences -- especially when Martin shoots a goon and whack his head with a frying pan -- in fact some of the best I've ever seen. A great gunfight, clever, hilariously funny, full of deadpan and twisted humor. Other cast comes and go throughout the screen and yet they delivers great performances with awesomely dialogues. Dan Aykroyd is amazing as this wise cracking hitman and I want to see him in more roles like this. Minnie Driver's accent is flawless with her East Coast accent. Alan Arkin also funny as this shrink who doesn't want to be involved with Martin. Joan Cussack is John Cussack's real sister, and she's in the movie as his secretary, Marcella, and she also delivers good acting. Jeremy Piven is John Cussack's best friend in real life, and he also in the movie as Paul, Martin's friend. Hank Azaria  and K.Freeman are the US Government assasin and they have great fun. There are too many list of actors who delivers great performances in this movie, I don't think we will have enough time. The point is, I watches this movie and my mind suddenly just goes completely....blank. Heh. I guess the secret of making a good movies is chemistry between the actors and a good storylines. This one has my vote.
